A Moment with God, Psalms 27:8
Oh, how wonderful this verse is. Humans instinctually seek an explanation for things. Some of us explain humanity and the world around us through evolution. While others believe that it is God who created everything we see. There are also those who think it is a mixture of the two beliefs.
Though there are many theories, we all seek something higher to explain and to guide us. Engrained in each of us, no matter what we believe is the Holy Spirit. God’s own voice, being spoken to us through the power of the Holy Spirit. Some recognize God’s voice every time he speaks to them. For others it takes years to stop and listen to his words.
Come, my HEART says, seek God’s face.
These are the words of David. David was very intimate with God. He had such a close relationship with the Lord and was comfortable admitting his joys and failings without fear of God leaving his side. He trusted in the Lord with his entire being. I cannot say I do the same, all the time. I cannot say I answer the call of God every time he speaks to me.
In this verse we see David say, “come, my HEART says…” his heart of course being God. When God speaks to us through the Holy Spirit, it is directly to our hearts that he is speaking. God created us in love, and in love he comes to us. When we go to God in prayer, don’t we first ask God to open our hearts so that we may hear his voice?
God wants us to seek him out. He wants to have a deep, personal connection with each and every one of his children. A friendship, a marriage, a partnership with Christ, that is what the Lord wants with you. He calls to you each day, yearning for that personal connection with you and he hopes that you will answer his call.
Lord, I do seek your face.
David responds to God’s voice instantly. There is no hesitation, no resistance. He doesn’t say, “hold on Lord, let me finish what I am doing and then I will spend some time with you.” David responds as we all should respond, IMMEDIATELY and with our ENTIRE heart.
Do we take enough time each day just sitting in the presence of the Lord? I dive into God’s word every morning before I get up with the kids and animals. Then I have some time in prayer. Yet I am guilty of only focusing on God with half of my heart and mind. I am a wife and a mother and I have to-do lists flying through my mind constantly. It takes quite a bit of will power to stop and focus on God completely.
We need to be more intentional in our time with the Lord. We need to give him our all, just as he has given us. Sit down and read his word, feel his presence in your heart. Ask him to be with you as you read and listen for his voice. Then take the time to pray with your heart, not from memory or out of habit. Pray as if he is a friend sitting next to you. He wants so badly to apart of your life, to be your friend. Build up your relationship with Christ and give him every part of you when he calls you, just as David did.
Three ways to be more intentional during your time with the Lord:
- Get up before your household wakes so that you will have nothing, but God, to focus on. Starting your day in God’s word, so that he can guide you throughout your day.
- Ask God to open your heart to his voice before you read scripture. Maybe there is something in the reading for that day he wants you to be especially aware of. Ask him into your heart before you do anything else.
- Pray, do not repeat the same prayer everyday. I will admit I pray roughly the same first few minutes of prayer everyday, but after the normal stuff I get to the personal things. Of course pray as you feel comfortable. But also pray as if you are speaking to a loved one. He is your God, but he is also your friend.
What are some ways you struggle in answering the Lord’s call?
