Live As Children of Light
During this age of social media and self-involvement it can be hard to see when someone needs a little light in their life. With our heads constantly down and focused on electronic devices, we often miss the signs that another may be shrouded in darkness. Not only that, but it we are more likely to fall into a pit of despair. As children of God we are called to be the light for someone else.
We Are Too Distracted
How often do you find yourself without your phone in your hand? I can bet that the answer to that question is, not very often. With technology and social media right at our fingertips so many of us are completely engrossed in our phones or tablets.
You are surrounded by people everyday at home and in public, but do you truly notice any of them? Do you see the old man lost in the aisles of the store because his wife is no longer alive and he is now required to do the shopping? How about the child at the park with his grandmother, his only caretaker, because his parents are drug addicts and cannot get clean? Did you notice the overwhelmed mom with the bags under eyes, just trying to get through another day when she is so deep in depression that another day feels utterly impossible?
More than likely no, you did not notice any of these things because we live in a world of self gratification and handheld devices. It is sad that you pass these people everyday, the very ones I am speaking of are in YOUR town, but you likely don’t see them. You may see them, but you are not seeing them as you should.
Ephesians 5:8 tells us, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” How can you be a child of light though if you are not focusing on anything other than yourself? You are missing out on so many opportunities to shine the light of God’s love into the hearts of those around you.

Social Media Gratification
The downside of social media is so that many of us feed into the need of getting likes and follows. You post your selfies and your daily activities for the world to see, with the intention of other PEOPLE expressing their opinion on your life. We are not meant to seek out the opinion of this world, but the opinion of our Father.
If you are relying on the opinion of those around you then you will be disappointed. Not only will people not always say kind things or what you want to hear, but you will never stop craving the attention.
In God you can rest assured that he will always accept, love, and cherish you no matter how you look or what you are doing. You are always of value to him. Your value to others should be irrelevant. If you continue putting your self-worth into the hands of those on social media then you will fall into a deep spiral of darkness.
3 Ways To Be The Light For Someone Else
Put Down The Electronics
Obviously the first thing you can do would be to put down your devices. Without the distraction of that then you will be more open to see what it is God wants you to see.
Also without the constant access to your social media feed there will be less chance of you getting caught up in the negativity and gossip of the world. Plus, your self worth will be based on God’s love of you, not of others.
Listen and Encourage
Sometimes all we need is someone to be a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on. When you feel isolated or alone having another person to talk to can be very comforting. I am not talking about passively listening, but actively listening.
You need to be fully engrossed in the conversation. Keep your focus on the person you are speaking to and nothing else. If you are focused on other things then you may miss a crucial part of this person’s pain. Not everyone is going to openly express the pain they are feeling. As an active participant in the conversation though, you will be able to read their body language and see their facial expressions.
I love the acronym T.H.I.N.K. before you speak. Anytime you are going to say something make sure it falls into one or more of these categories.
- T – Is it true?
- H – Is it helpful?
- I – Is is inspirational?
- N – Is it necessary?
- K – Is it kind?
When someone is in a dark place they may not feel loved or have anyone giving them encouraging words. You can be that person, you can be an example of Christ and bring glimmers of light into their dark world.
Knowing someone is hurting and not likely to ask for help or reach out gives you the opportunity to live as Christ. You may not know what is on their heart, like our Father does, but you can still be there for them. Going out of your way to bring some joy to someone’s day could turn their day around. It could also turn around the entire season they are currently in.
When we know we are loved and have support it really can empower us to keep pushing forward. It can also bring us out of a hard mental place we may be stuck in. A depressed person may not physically want to be around anyone. That simple human interaction though, enables that person to slowly come out of the pit they are in. One reason God created Eve was so Adam would have a companion and I believe we were not meant to try to get through this life without the support of others.
Today you can choose to seek out someone and be the light in their life. So look up, listen, THINK before speak, and be an example of our loving Father for someone else today!
