How To Find Rest In God
Life certainly gets busy and things can start to pile up quickly. You’ve taken on more than you can actually handle right now. Aside from the responsibilities you’ve taken on outside of the home, you also have your children and all of their activities, household responsibilities and you work. We have all been overwhelmed by times of busyness in our lives, but we can always find rest in God.
“My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
Know Your Limit
You will never find rest if you are always saying, “YES!” There will always be opportunities and people asking for your time and attention. You are the only one who knows all of the responsibilities you currently have. Declining an opportunity is not something that will be frowned upon.
If you immediately start planning in your mind how you will fit another thing into your schedule, then you probably do not need to take that on. It is okay to say no, you are not expected to do everything and still function at an optimal emotional and mental level.
You are actually hurting yourself and your family by taking on more than you realistically have time for. It takes away time from yourself and your family. Also, the amount of physical and mental strain that extra responsibilities create can cause you to be not a very nice person to be around.
Reassess Your Priorities
No one wants to have to tell the head of children’s ministry at church that they cannot take on any Sundays in the nursery that month. Just like we don’t want to be that mom that cannot make the volunteer activity for the PTA this week. We don’t want to be known as the person who doesn’t help out.
You should not be focusing on the things you are not doing, instead focus on what you are doing.
You should not be focusing on the things you are not doing, instead focus on what you are doing. It does not matter what anyone else thinks of your decision, you are the only one who truly knows what you can handle.
Make sure your priorities are in the order they should be. You need to always make sure you have time for God. Everyday you should be spending some time in prayer, meditation, or in his word. Quality time with the Lord should be number one and making sure it is can help everything else fall into place.
After God should be your husband and children. If taking on another activity is going to take time away from your family then you do not need to accept. Making sure you are spending quality time with your family is very important. Nourishing the relationship with your husband and teaching your children always override doing that extra project at work or volunteering after work to do a project for the school PTA.
Resting In Our Lord
Sometimes when we feel overwhelmed it can seem that there will never be any rest. We also may not even recognize that we are stressed out about the amount of things we have on our plate. Irritability and frustration aimed at our children and husband usually stems from busyness. We are so busy and when someone interrupts that, we snap.
This is an indication you may have said yes one too many times lately. The Lord always know when you are overwhelmed or have taken on too much. He knows when you are anxious and have too much going on. Our Father is sitting next to you through it all, hoping that you will recognize the need to take some things off your to-do list.
We are told that, “his presence will go with us, and he will give us rest.” If you are feeling the weight of all you carry, just stop. Sit down and close your eyes, call on your Father. He is always right next to you on this journey through life. He is always hoping you will seek our his shelter and love. God will show you what needs to be removed from your life and above this he will give you the rest you so desperately need.
Have you found yourself in a time of busyness? I know when I start snapping at my children a lot that I need to put that to-do list down and refocus my priorities. How do you know that you have taken on too much? Let me know below!
